2010 VINTAGE

The challenges from 2010’s growing season are well documented.  The sporadic weather patterns and overall cool growing conditions wreaked havoc on the nerves of many accomplished winemakers but Stephane’s twenty plus years in Bordeaux made him well suited to find opportunity in this unique year.  The combination of meticulous vineyard work throughout the year together with the patience to harvest our parcels late has resulted in a range of wines that are powerfully structured with rich, opulent fruit and fully transparent in their expression of terroir.  Each wine holds the promise of a fine evolution in the cellar for many years to come.

2010 Charlie Smith Vineyard Sonoma Cabernet Sauvignon

Our rocky south facing parcel of the Charlie Smith vineyard delivered a dense and powerful expression of Cabernet.  Deep magenta in color, the nose exhibits nuances of leather, soil, and cigar box reminiscent of a top flight Left Bank Bordeaux.  A full spectrum of mineral-laced black fruits greets you on the palate, leading to a finish with bold tannin and great length.  This is a towering expression of Cabernet for a region often known for showing a softer side of the grape.  Today with ample aeration the wine offers a glimpse of what will surely be a grand evolution.

2010 Red Hills Vineyard Lake County Cabernet Sauvignon

The 2010 Lake County Cabernet reminds us once again that world class wine need not always come from the most pedigreed and time-honored sites.  Grown at 2200’ above sea level in black obsidian and gravel soils, this unique terroir imparts freshness and complexity to this bold yet approachable Cabernet.  Deep purple in color, a perfume of black cherry, basil, and spice leads to a savory palate of briary red fruits complimented by hints of dark chocolate and sage.  Lively acidity and broad silky tannin makes the wine enjoyable today but our past vintages show this wine is built for the cellar as well.
